Please Don’t Grow Up

I was fortunate when assigned to be Chantal’s guardian angel. I died in a car accident when a drunk driver hit me, two days before my birthday. My husband is devastated, but I’ve gone to his dreams and he knows that I am okay. Chantal was born on my 56th birthday and I was assigned to watch over her for all of her life. She was a beautiful little baby. I was never able to have any children of my own. Chantal is just like the daughter I never had, even though I’m unable to talk with her.

Chantal’s baby years went by too fast. Her blonde hair grew straight and long, and she learned how to crawl, and then walk, and eventually at 2 and a half she was saying basic sentences. When she turned 5, she started going to preschool. She was a very quick learner, even at a young age. By her first day of kindergarten, she had her numbers and alphabet down pat. All through her elementary years, she was always the smartest and prettiest girl. Those were the days.

She hit 4th grade and she had her first crush. Chantal and her crush were the most adorable, harmless pair. All they did was hold hands. It was precious. There was never an official “break up” between the two. They just grew apart, but for a while after she just seemed a little down. Of course, by the middle of the summer she was over it, but I became worried about the future. What if one boy really broke her heart? She was too nice of a girl for that too happen. Heartbreak is more painful than the worst bone break. “Please don’t grow up” I whispered frequently, aware that Chantal would never hear.

The rest of middle school went by in a blur. She had a few “boyfriends” but nothing serious. Still, I began to worry about the serious relationships that are bound to come in her future. She always became so upset after breaking apart from a boy. I was afraid to think about what’ll happen to her in the fur\ture, but it was still hovering in the back of my mind.

Then she began her freshman year. She did extremely well academically, but more than once she snuck out to parties. I was so surprised to see this from her. It was so out of character. She had never made such bad decisions. Of course, she went to these parties all throughout high school, but I was most astounded when in her sophomore year she drank alcohol. Not on a regular basis, thankfully, but maybe once a month. Still, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Again and again I found myself whispering, “Please don’t grow up.” Looking down at her, I could see that she was growing up, maybe even a little too quickly.
I couldn’t just helplessly watch her make mistakes; after all it was my job to make sure she was okay. Now that I look back, I realize that I probably shouldn’t have done it. Before I explain what I did, you have to understand that as a guardian angel, you are only allowed to go into one persons dream. If you disobeyed this, and the two or more people who’s dreams you went into talked about you and made the connection that they had the same person in their dream, the guardian angel would no longer be allowed to be a guardian angel. So, I chose the person of who’s dreams I could travel to. I went into her mother’s dream and showed her what Chantal was up to. Poor Chantal got into so much trouble. Never did she drink again until she was of legal age.
In her summer before her junior year, she met Drew. Drew had dark, almond colored brown hair, blue eyes, and all of the charm in the world. The two were inseparable. Although I was happy for her, I couldn’t help but worry. I couldn’t stand to see her get her heart broken. She loved Drew, and Drew loved her. Regardless, there was that little pinch of worry in the back of my mind, always nudging at my happiness for them.

Drew treated Chantal just like how every girl would want to be treated by a boy. He understood her and he always knew the right thing to say. I could just tell that Chantal’s heart fluttered when she saw him. They were the power couple at school. Everybody wanted to be friends with the two of them. The nicest part is, they befriended everybody that ever approached them. They didn’t act like your regular popular kids. They were down to earth and were apart of many after school clubs and sports. They treated people how they wanted to be treated. I was so proud of Chantal for this. However, high school comes not only with learning academics, but also with learning valuable life lessons.

With Drew as a straight A student helping her, Chantal’s grades were superb. In her senior year, she applied to outstanding schools like Brown, Cornell, and Columbia, and she was accepted to all of them. However, she seemed to lose sight of her academics and how college was the gateway to the rest of her life. She seemed to believe that Drew was everything, and that as long as she had him she was going to be fine. Drew was planning on being a doctor, and he was going to go to a pre-med school 300 miles away. There weren’t any top notch schools that Chantal was interested in going to near the school Drew was going to. Chantal panicked. For a while she considered not going to college, and moving out to near Drew’s school. She wasn’t thinking clearly. I was worrying. She couldn’t just give up the rest of her life for Drew. They loved each other, but she needed a college degree. I started to panic. I could not let her give up her life. She would look back and regret it, and it was my job to prevent these things from happening.

I had no idea what to do.

Her mom tried, her dad tried, her friends tried, and Drew tried, but no one could sway her opinion. It was just almost the end of February, and her acceptance letters were due soon. We were running out of time. No one gave up, everyone tried to persuade her, but nothing worked. There was only one thing left to do.

I am not exactly sure why I did, but one night I wandered into Drew’s dream. I was blown away by what I saw. He was dreaming about Chantal. She was about 35 years older, she was all alone, and she was dwelling on how she didn’t go to college and now had nothing to do with her life. This was my chance. I could go into his dream and tell him what to do. I know the thought has been lingering in his brain, but he knew it would hurt the both of them so much. There was no choice left. I wasn’t going to let her ruin her life.

I went into Drew’s dream.

I didn’t care that I broke the rules, but I needed to do it. It wasn’t like I was fooling around, I was doing what I was supposed to be doing. I was protecting Chantal. I’d rather have her have at least a chance to a successful life, rather than no chance at all. I’d give up being her guardian angel for her happiness.

If she knew me back then, and if she knew what I did, she probably would have never spoken to me for the rest of her life. I told Drew that if they broke up, she wouldn’t follow him, and then she’d go to college.

He knew it was the best thing for her, and that was all he wanted. It hurt me as much as it hurt them, and I cried as I watched Chantal cry in her room. I cried as I watched Drew cry in his room. By the end of the month, Chantal was finally in the college frame of mind. She sent in her acceptance letter to Brown, and continued her senior year in a funk. My heart ached for her. I hated to see her like this. But it had to happen.

As she entered the summer before her first year at college, she started to heal. She hung out with her friends more, and Drew seemed to fade less and less from her mind. But there was one problem on my end.

Drew talked with Chantal’s mother about the dream, and they put two and two together and realized they both had me in their dreams. That meant no more guardian angel for me. When I saw them talking my heart dropped. I cried as I reminisced all of the memories of Chantal.

I got lucky.

I was told that because I went into two different people’s dreams out of the goodness of my heart and also because I was protecting Chantal. I was beyond thankful.

Now, it is 70 years later, and Chantal is sitting here next to me. She died after falling down the stairs and breaking her skull at age 88. But now she is fine, and I’m glad I finally got to meet her after 88 years of just watching and protecting. Once she found out I was her guardian angel, she thanked me for having Drew break up with her. She realizes now that she was blinded by love and she owes all of her success to me. It isn’t all because of me, but its’s nice to know that she says it is. Chantal and I spend much time traveling Heaven together, seeing all ruined cities, such as Atlantis. I couldn’t have asked for a better person to be a guardian angel for.
